Glossary
From Gotham: Year One Wiki
Here you'll find a basic glossary of RP terms that players in GYO might toss around on a frequent basis. The list is ever-growing, so feel free to add to it as you see fit, or ask on the talk page for something to be added or explained.

C
Canon : refers to the source from which a pup is taken. When it's said that something is 'canon' it means that thing, plot point, characterization, detail comes directly from the source or feels very like the source.
Canon Puncture (CP) : refers to one character being informed (either by another character or by some other means) that they are fictional. PLEASE NOTE: there is no canon puncture in GYO, because NO character is fictional. Once the cataclysm happens, the multiverse protects itself by prohibiting anyone from knowing that anyone else is fictional. You might be standing talking to Captain Picard of the Starship Enterprise and be the biggest Star Trek in your world, but you will not recognize Picard as fictional. He's just not that Picard and this is not weird to you in any way.
Continuity : this refers to the flow of time within the game. GYO functions with strict continuity. That means that threads/posts/communications occur in the order they are posted or in a specific order agreed on by the muns.
D
Debut : a character's first "arrival" thread in the game. In most cases, this will take place in a daily gathering post, but in some cases may occur in private threads.
E
Entrance Post (EP) : not to be confused with a debut, an EP is just a post to the your journal that is an invitation for other pups to thread with you.
F
FIFO : stands for 'fade in, fade out', where a portion of a thread (often with adult content) is skipped over to allow a thread to continue, and both muns agree what occurred in the "fade out".
FTB : stands for 'fade to black', where the end of a thread (often with adult content) is not played out, but both muns agree that interaction continued beyond the last tag.
G
Gathering Post : a post where participating pups tag each other. Individual top-level tags (an entry tag into a gathering posts) may contain specific OOC notes about tagging the pup. Ie, OOC: this thread is for yo_jwinchester, yo_dean, and yo_ruby. Or any threads occur after thread with yo_notimpulsive.
I
IC : short for in-character, meaning something the character thinks or feels or does. A pup can also be referred to as IC meaning they're played very close to how they appear in their canon (a compliment).
L
Late Tags : Up to the definition of the poster, but for the most part a tag to an EP is not considered 'late' unless it comes more than a few days after the original post went up. A 'late' tag on a gathering post is any tag occurring the next day. In general, late tags on gathering posts are discouraged in order to keep main comm play quick and spontaneous. Discouraged does not mean disallowed, however. Use late tags to gathering posts at your discretion.
M
Meta : short for metahuman; the default term for any humanoid with powers, whether by birth or granted later through accident or design. This is the term preferred both in the game and by the DCU for what Marvel calls mutants. A vampire is a meta but also a supernatural. Confusingly, meta also refers to conversations about characters or in character occurring outside the game in commentary on the game. For example, yo_m and yo_prettybird become involved in a brawl. yo_oncearobin not present during the fight, comments to yo_dean in an email: "damn, that's hot." That's a meta comment. At the same time, meta may refer to an extended discussion of the nuances of character or text/source.
Mun : short for mundane, meaning you, the real life person playing the character.
N
NPC : Non-player character; characters who generally do not have journals and are not "main" characters. They serve mainly to further the story along and provide color and tension. Villains are all NPCs in Gotham: Year One. Some NPCs are controlled by the mods. Some players have family NPCs or NPC animals.
O
OOC : stands for out of character, meaning something the mun says or thinks or does. IE : you might write an OOC note at the bottom of your post indicating what your pup is wearing or some other bit of info not contained in the post. Also, a pup can be OOC if the way they're played deviates severely from the way they're depicted in canon (not a compliment).
P
PB : stands for 'played by', meaning the avatar chosen for a pup's icons.
PC : Player character; meaning the character you're playing. See also "Pup"
Pup : short for puppet, meaning the character you're playing.
Q
Queue : the list of pups a player is considering applying after their current pup.
R
Reqs : short for 'requirements', meaning the number of threads/posts a pup is required to have per month. Used as 'made reqs' or 'didn't make reqs'. For Gotham: Year One's reqs, please see the Participation Requirements page.
Retcon : when something that was played out in-game is decided or agreed by all muns involved to be retracted, so the pups involved will thereafter behave as if it never happened. Might actually involve deleting a thread or post, but doesn't always. Comes from 'retro' and 'continuity' and is a grand tradition in comic books.
S
Slowtime : when a post is supposed to happen on a certain day or time in-game but you're working on the thread IRL long after the time has "passed". Often refers to tagging happening very slowly.
T
Tag : 1) a character's name or other designation (location, gathering, mod post, etc) as added to a post in the 'edit tags' function. 2) a comment in a thread of game-play.
Thread : a series of 'tags' between one or more pups; a conversation or possible plot point.
Top Level : a character's first tag to a post; often used in gathering posts where a character tags into the post with his or her top-level, and others threading with that character reply to it.
W
Wrap : just what it sounds like; a thread is wrapped when it gets to a logical 'end point' or conclusion.
