What is it?

Gotham: Year One is a pan-fandom, post-cataclysmic Gotham roleplaying game with a mod-run ongoing storyline. The DC Universe provides the backdrop for the game, but characters played in the game may come from any established fictional canon source -- comics, anime, books, films, television, et cetera. Characters appear and disappear in the city through unstable wormholes, and the focus of the game is building and rebuilding the world and lives while the events of the overall story unfold.

How it Began

A stunning gala: meant to celebrate the opening of a new wing in the prestigious Gotham Museum of Art, housing the Grayson Collection of Romany and Circus Artifacts, acquired by the longtime ward and adopted son of Bruce Wayne; among the highlights of the collection: a crystalline statue rumored to be imbued with mystical powers, allowing he who possessed it to know the future.

The problem: the artifact was prized by criminals the world over, and the temptation to steal it out from under Batman's nose to great to resist. Their cunning plan: using a time-freezing device on the gala and the well-protected museum, the artifact would be stolen and none of Gotham's heroes--police or masked--could stop them.

It was to be the social event of the year. Instead, it would be the last.

On March 20th, 2009, life as Gotham knew it ended. Time and space fluctuated for a brief moment. Worlds collided and the city fell.

In the aftermath of the cataclysm, the city found itself crumpled down to the foundations, cut off from the rest of the world, worse off than it had been since the earthquake that destroyed the city five years prior and the No Man's Land that followed. The city's protectors and her citizens rallied but there was little they could do. And when the dust settled: thousands were dead, tens of thousands were homeless, hundreds of thousands were missing.

Where We Are Now

On July 9th, 2010, life as Gotham had known it changed. From the combined efforts of scientists, mages, gods, and metas, a new world was born. Their effort to reconnect Gotham to its universe or any universe had failed. But affected by the will of Gothamites old and new, the multiverse expanded Gotham's protective bubble, bringing with it more space, new challenges, and some surprising elements from old homes.

The mission: take the gift of new land and ocean and turn New Gotham into a sustainable world, without losing hope or giving up on seeing friends, family, home again. But for some, that desire has changed. Many have come to see Gotham as home. Built families, lives, found love, and want desperately to stay together.

Tensions between old Gothamites and new, humans and non-humans and metahumans and magic users, vigilantes and authorities, shifting crime patterns and what's generally referred to as Gotham Weird, continue to make New Gotham an uncomfortable, strange, and difficult place to live. Some days, just surviving the streets is a struggle.

Welcome to New Gotham. Are you up to the challenge?
